the army have gone in to Tahrir Sq to say there will be a big announcement soon.

Unconfirmed reports Mubarak will stand down.

yes I have heard this too = have the Americans made some kind of deal do you think?

GothAnneGeddes · 10/02/2011 17:03

Heard this too. Think someone (US) has made Mubarak an offer so he'll step down, the greedy shite. Also rumours he's in Sharm El Sheikh.

The #jan25 hashtag on Twitter is the best for fresh news.

earwicga · 10/02/2011 17:22

Looks like the army have staged a coup. Tahrir Square is packed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2011 17:32

Going to be an interesting evening. I hope what ever happens, it is good for the people.

SparkleRainbow · 10/02/2011 17:37

"it is good for the people"
Oh god lets hope so.

Chil1234 · 10/02/2011 17:50

If the army have staged a coup, the people will have been right royally shafted... exchanging a dictator in a suit backed my men in uniform for a dictator in a uniform backed by men in suits.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/02/2011 17:58

Agree with Chil1234 on this one occasion Wink

If power is handed to the VP, this is very bad news as he said a few days ago that Egypt was not ready for democracy...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2011 18:31

Headline says Mubarak not stepping down.
What on earth is he doing? Tomorrow looks worrying if nothing is resolved in a reasonable way tonight.

BeenBeta · 10/02/2011 18:44

Army are reported to have taken charge of the Suez canal and Egyptian navy ships escorting vessels through the canal.

Meanwhile The Kearsarge, a US amphibious assault ship and other US navy ships have been stationed in the Eastern Med.

Meanwhile the current Egyptian Vice President (recently appointed by Mubarak) who is likely going to become interim President is apparently well regarded by Israel.

Im not sure how the Egyptian people are going to take this.

headfairy · 10/02/2011 19:10

Mubarak can't be in Sharm, his statement this evening is coming from the presidential palace in Cairo. Unless he's got a cardboard cutout backdrop!

Rumour is he had already left the country and the televised speech was prerecorded.

Pan · 10/02/2011 20:37

Rumour is his car broke down on his way to Sharm, and David Beckham gave him a push.

tho' not as strong a push as millions of Egyptians want to give him...

onimolap · 10/02/2011 20:46

SKY was reporting that a senior spokesman had said the broadcast was to be live.

It was due at 2000GMT: still not started. What's going o?

BeenBeta · 10/02/2011 20:49

Its on now.

Pan · 10/02/2011 20:50

and he isn't going. Good lord.

Meglet · 10/02/2011 20:52

this is very bad isn't it Sad.

headfairy · 10/02/2011 20:53

I do hope it doesn't all kick off in Tahrir sq now

OP posts:
Pan · 10/02/2011 20:55

no-one knows it seems. Talk of 'martyrs' isn't going to go down well. He appears to be talking outside of the military objectives.

zanz1bar · 10/02/2011 20:58

What on earth is he doing?
Amending the constitution isn't going to be enough now.

onimolap · 10/02/2011 20:59

Lifts state of emergency???????

BeenBeta · 10/02/2011 21:00

He is still talking about 'safeguarding' the constitution until elections.

Which means he isn't going to resign.

zanz1bar · 10/02/2011 21:05

Oh dear, this is not looking at all good.

BeenBeta · 10/02/2011 21:10

I am really worried people will get crushed in that square.

People expected a resignation and there will be no acceptance of this situation.
