I have it the other way round - my Mother was a very liberal parent but expects me to be quite strict with ds (although she dotes on him, she isn't hard on him, just expects me to be).

This made me laugh, my mum was really strict with me and my sister re going out, homework, "being cheeky", rolling my eyes up to heaven etc, quite handy at throwing the odd smack but with my 2 dds I have never seen anything like it, infinite patience, time to spend making up stories, sleepovers, baking etc. She was a bit of a shitty mum sometimes but as a nana she's outdone herself. Sometimes she tells me off for being too strict with dd1 (5) and I'm like wtf Grin

I just think it's something we have to look forward to - winding our dcs up and seeing their faces when we say "oh she doesn't have to say please" to our cherubic dgc (yes - i have been told this!!!). there has got to be SOME compensation for getting oder Wink

oh - I had very relaxed parents (and perhaps overly liberal) and they are still cooing over ds - and he's nearly five.

My very liberal mum fawns over ds and it's really annoying. My very liberal dad keeps telling me I need to teach ds more manners (he's very well mannered actaully) and that's really annoying too.

I think being a parent and grandparents are different things.

In my limited experience it's true. My mum and IL's dote on DC, but like Edams mum expect us to be quite strict. Bit annoying sometimes. If DD is agitating for a biscuit Mum would advise me to insist on her finishing her dinner first (well, duh!) but in the next breath hand her the biscuit herself while I'm hovering making yummy noises to a spoonful of peas. Hmm Thanks mum.

Have you ever seen Bill Cosby's stand-up routine about parents and grandparents?

It is soooo true, and funny!

But of course! That's why being a grandparent is so wonderful...we don't have to do the discipline, just love them to bits and spoil them. I was once a strict mother but am very pleased to see that both my children are wonderful parents, much better than ever I was.
