That's it, really - according to Radio 4 this morning, there are now more Greggs outlets in the UK than there are branches of McDonalds!

Yeah I think that too. It is a sandwich shop and bakery ffs! If it was a local independent baker it would be dead posh innit? Just happens to be a chain is all, but a fairly ethical one by what previous posters have said?

I had a Gregg's sausage roll yesterday. It was divine Grin

There are 7 Greggs in one small city centre here and one McDonalds. I live in the homelands of Greggs where kids are weaned on a pasty and blue pop.

wonkylegs · 06/05/2012 07:18

I live a stones throw away from the shop which used to be the 1st ever Greggs.

molly3478 · 06/05/2012 10:24

Its weird cause when I was working in Gateshead I think there were 4 in a really small area, whereas now I am back down South there isnt any at all. Dont know if there is any in South East but dont think there is any in South West

wonkylegs · 06/05/2012 12:46

That's because they are originally a Newcastle bakery who started buying up bakery chains so there are more of them up here than some areas down south.

nolongeramug · 06/05/2012 12:56

I'm in the south west town... We have two greggs about 100 m apart!Confused

TheArmadillo · 06/05/2012 13:02

I'm in south west and have 3 greggs within 40 mins walking distance. The macdonalds is much further away (about 75 mins).

juneybean · 06/05/2012 13:04

@ KenDodds was going to say there's a fair few in Sunderland city centre alone never mine the outside areas. Only one Maccie D's in the town as well.

molly3478 · 06/05/2012 13:12

Sorry I meant devon/cornwall i dont think there is any

Lots of Greggs shops are tiny outlets, hardly any bigger than those moble phone accessories kiosks. There's 3 within 30 seconds walk of Wimbledon station (dead posh area!), but no McDonalds.

I was totally confused about why they were VAT-exempt up to now unlike McDonalds etc given they all sell hot takeaway food. And then found out the hard way by getting a cold pasty from Greggs - they don't sell 'hot food' ie they don't keep it hot, so if it's not still hot from the oven, you're SOL. So much for keeping me warm while waiting for a bus in the rain. Now I know to ask what is still hot and then have one of those. (need to keep up my stodge intake while bfing!)

McDonalds UK is actually a pretty good organisation, buying all UK-grown salad etc and not ripping off farmers unlike certain supermarkets, training staff, etc. Unlike McDonalds in the rest of the world which hasn't been exposed to nearly as much consumer pressure.

We also have a Greggs cafe juneybean aren't you glad you live up here Grin

BestIsWest · 06/05/2012 21:44

A Gregg's cafe, you say? DH would die and think he'd gone to heaven. There are loads near us in Swansea and yet Aberystwyth where DD is a student has none. Wonder is they do franchises?
