As much as I value the Royals and looking forward to the wedding - why a bank holiday? Is it that necessary for business' to fork out another non-productive day?

Long gone the days of street parties (Di's & charles was the last wonderful street party) This will never happen again which is sad for our children.

So really its a day off.

Amongst quite a lot of days of at that time too.
Fri 22 April - Good Friday
Sun 24 April - Easter Sunday
Mon 25 April - Easter Monday

Then, back to school/work for a couple of days and then ......

Fri 29 April - Wedding day off!
Mon 2 May - May Day

Personally, would have preferred another day off in the autumn rather than the spring! Grin

We need the bank holiday so we can all attend a big rally/riot about how much this crap is costing without having to worry about losing out on much needed work money.

If enough people think its sad not to have street parties, then maybe that makes enough people to arrange some?

ChippyMinton · 23/11/2010 14:31

Mine at school 7 days in April too. Let's hope the weather's good.

Concordia · 23/11/2010 14:35

yes, virtually no point looking for a job before april as i will have to have nearly the whole month - bar 6 days looking after the DCs. Easter bank holidays and easter holidays are separate this year meaning even more days...As april and august likely to be in the same leave year under any leave year scenario don't think this will work. Hope it's good weather in april so we can make the best of our holidays and long weekends.

curlymama · 23/11/2010 14:54

I'm more than happy to have all those days off, but Dh is a bit put out because he is contract. If he doesn't work he doesn't get paid, so in the space of two weeks he's going to lose four days pay. They will close his office so he won't have the option of working if he wants too.

We will be pretty skint around that time, and I'm sure there will be contractors everywhere feeling the same.

UK workers get about 3 fewer statutory holidays than our continental European counterparts and we last got an extra bank holiday for the Queen's Jubliee eight years ago. Don't think a day off is going to bust the economy somehow. We're organising a street get-together where I live and I hope the Royals push the boat out on this one. Show the world that we know how to do a party properly and aren't just an island full of whingeing old miseries... :)

I am so glad it will be a bank holiday, we don't get many and dd will love watching a wedding

LIZS · 23/11/2010 15:15

oh bugger - that throws out my work planning for next year !

longfingernails · 23/11/2010 18:26

I will probably be helping to organise a street party. It will be fantastic fun.

MrsDaffodill · 23/11/2010 18:30

Could it be because it easier to manage all the security, etc, if people aren't also trying to go about their daily business?

maxpower · 23/11/2010 20:09

I'm assuming all the people who were moaning about taxpayers contributing to the cost of the wedding will be going into work that day then......Hmm

Bumperlicious · 23/11/2010 20:31

Im on maternity leave. do you think i get to add this bank holiday to my TOIL?

Hulababy · 23/11/2010 20:32

No complaints here - happy to take any additional holidays going :)

geordieminx · 23/11/2010 20:33

Dh and I are both contractors, so our offices will be closed, we will have no choice other than to take the day off and loose over £500, happy days eh?

MmeLindt · 23/11/2010 20:36

I am peeved cause it is in our school holidays which means that no one will be here to come to my Garden Party.

Linnet · 23/11/2010 20:44

My children will also only be at school for 7 days next April, hardly worth sending them in.

I do like a royal wedding it has to be said but I dont want the day off. I'll have to take it as annual leave and I'd much rather work that day and have a day off in the summer holidays or at Christmas.

duckyfuzz · 23/11/2010 20:50

in our (2 teacher) house DH and DTs will be on school hols that week anyway, so no benefit to them, but I will have had a full week off on my own and only a 3 day week that week, no complaints here :o

icandoit · 24/11/2010 01:16

My children will have 5 1/2 days of school in April. Think I'll go back to teaching! Smile
