I thought it was really brave and strong of her to be seen in public and speak openly about her alopecia.
She has had a vile couple of years and without knowing all that much about her, I really hope things start to look brighter for her soon.

KBear · 09/09/2005 15:32

Must take some guts to do that - good on her. My DH lost some of his hair after the shock of an accident - it affected his self-esteem quite badly for a while but it did grow back eventually. I hope she has the same luck.

I read an interview with her in New woman recently. When she was anorexic she just ate water based foods like grapes and cucumber. When she was projected onto the house of Parlimanet naked by FHM she thought her bum looked too big and she was only 6 stone.

KBear · 09/09/2005 15:35

Unfortunately not! There are only 350 shops at Bluewater!! Just left a message for you on Billy Bee thread - wondered how your DS was today.

mommie · 09/09/2005 15:36

she also had PND badly; i feel v sorry for her. you wonder whether she really got the help she needed.

what I don't get is when your diet is so poor like that how come her face etc looks so young and fresh? Or is it all make up do you think?

I guess it could be their genetic makeup. You hear how much damage bingeing and purging does to your teeth but then models often admit to doing that but you never see them with yellow teeth either

sweetbean · 09/09/2005 16:08

God poor girl she's so brave !

Tortington · 09/09/2005 16:21

well done gail!

Davros · 10/09/2005 19:50

I saw her about a month ago (she lives over the road) and her skin/hair is naturally radiant and gleaming. She had very little make up on but she DID have all her hair from what I could see!

crazydazy · 10/09/2005 19:51

That must be every woman's worst nightmare!!!

She has so much courage!!!!

swiperfox · 10/09/2005 20:00

dp thought we were sitting talking to her at the nick jr jump up in london - maybe not!

spidermama · 10/09/2005 20:02

Good on her. How comed she still manages to look good?

PeachyClair · 10/09/2005 20:17

One brave woman

MrsMiggins · 10/09/2005 20:21

we have a lady at work who suffers with this

does it grow back eventually?
I ask as this lady has had no hair for 3 yrs now

sorry to be ignorant

PeachyClair · 10/09/2005 20:25

I think the answer is sometimes? Dh and FIL have partial alopaecia (sp) and that seems to be a permanent thing.

WideWebWitch · 10/09/2005 20:28

I feel sorry for Gail Porter too, someone should send her here. In fact I think mumsnet ought to send cards advertising mumsnet to all new sleb mums, they can get anonymous advice here.

Janh · 10/09/2005 20:30

She still has her eyebrows though - ???

(I know someone who has had alopecia for years; she wears a wig with a headscarf, her eyebrows are pencilled in.)

bubble99 · 10/09/2005 20:39

My auntie lost all of her hair (including her eyebrows) after the birth of my cousin 38 years ago. It never grew back and she pencilled her eyebrows in. Some children pull their hair out obsessively, and it can carry on into adulthood. I don't know if this is the case with GP, as she says she has alopecia, but as she has a history of self-harming I wonder if this is a continuation (pulling hair out) Alopecia can be patchy though, and I'm not sure if hair loss (patchy or otherwise) from the entire body is the norm.
