Not so long ago it was a bog-standard way of disposing of unwanted puppies in this country, too (has no on else read DogsBody by Diana Wynne, set in the 1970s?). Not saying it's at all excusable, but am a bit surprised by the surprise, iyswim.

Not so long ago, it wasn't unheard of for unwanted/illegitimate children to be disposed of in this manner (or similar) Shock

There has been a rumour circulating in our family for sometime now regarding a newborn baby 'quietly' taken down to the river. Sad Sad. We are talking mid 1800's mind you!

BettySuarez · 02/09/2010 09:48

Probably should add that I haven't really the faintest idea whether it's true or not!

oh god this is awful. not watching the footage as i can't bear it but why, why, why would someone do that?? even if they just couldn't be arsed to find homes for the pups why film it? that is sick? what is wrong with these people?

ragged my dad often talks of that happening with puppies and kittens when he was a child. Sad

it physically hurts when i think of it and it gets worse every time i hear something like this.

Actually, the bulls that go in the bull-ring have a fantastic life, they are pampered treasured preened and spoilt rotten until their final moments -- and the best ones get spared to breed again and live into their dotage (what other domesticated bulls get to do that?). A far far better life than your standard dairy cow has in this country. For a brief 25-45 minutes of pain and stress at the end, I think I'd opt for the Toro's life in a heartbeat, tbh, compared to most livestock.

Can't argue the case for goats flung off of towers, though.

I remember being in Turkey back in the 90s and there are feral cats all over the place. Some locals used to grab kittens and throw them in the sea for fun Angry

Never been back there.

In Romania, in Bucharest, there are packs of stray dogs roaming the streets, and rabies is rife. I was very nearly attacked several times and it was very frightening. I suppose in some horrible way at least people who dispose of puppies are taking responsibility, but of course getting one's dog neutered is a much more human way of doing it. I do not know how many vets are available or how much they cost in Bosnia though. Talking about animal cruelty in countries with broken down infrastructures is all very well but you have to know what kind of lives people have to live first.

onagar · 03/09/2010 14:40

If someone is taking pleasure from killing them that is disgusting. As bad as fox hunting and for the same reasons.

The actual thing about killing puppies though you have to get into perspective. It was/is the standard way to get rid of unwanted ones. Most of the world don't have a vet with a nice little waiting room to go to nor would they have the money.

Also we poison rats, trap badgers and so on. We also kill vast numbers of animals for food.

onagar · 03/09/2010 14:44

Oh and we put lobsters in boiling water.

Lots of people are now killing food animals the slow painful way to suit their religion.

This person hardly seems worth singling out.

Ripeberry · 03/09/2010 20:04

What about the hundreds of wild animals killed on our roads each day. Not a day goes past without seing a badger or fox corpse on the side of the road.

Not very pleasant when you are cycling either Sad
