I am playing a giant King Rat in our Panto this year... maybe i should go there and research my part to 'find' my charactor?! Grin

Kaloki · 21/08/2010 14:17

Our rats have yellow teeth, and they are gorgeous Grin (I am biased, obviously)

moondog · 21/08/2010 14:21

I went to someone's house for dinner t'other night.
The kid there reached for a plastic bottle he was keeping on the outside windowsill and showed it to me. Squirming in the bottom of it were 3 baby rats.

Ruined the night for me. I think he had fonud a nest.

BuzzingNoise · 21/08/2010 14:22

it was a hoax, I think.

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 21/08/2010 14:25

The local lincoln paper quotes all the local experts who disagree with the mammal woman and say it is coypu, first introduced into this country in the early 20th century much like mink, for their fur.

I live nearby so this is what we are believingGrin

BeenBeta · 21/08/2010 14:30

The picture I saw of the dead one didnt actually show the whole animal so it did make me slightly suspicious.

Has anyone actually seen a full picture of the one that was shot?

I had a friend at school who came from Zambia - he told me they had a Cane Rat in their kitchen behind the fridge. Everyone went out of the house then they left the outside door open, he sat down on the lawn with a shotgun and blasted it when it came out.

People in Africa eat cane rats as they are quite meaty.

Kaloki · 21/08/2010 15:01

Oooh I want a cane rat!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 21/08/2010 15:14

They're near here as well according to local paper and we're nowhere near Bradford. I was at a zoo the other day and saw some copyu things and they looked quite nice.

Are you legally allowed to hunt rats/whatever with air rifles on housing estates? I know you can shoot bunnies in fields, etc but I'd have thought that blasting away on a housing estate is against the law?

arsesandoldlace · 21/08/2010 15:19

Might be some petgambian pouched rats

arsesandoldlace · 21/08/2010 15:20

they are becoming quite popular in the exotic pet community in the UK.

Kaloki · 21/08/2010 15:20

I want one of those too!! Damn you all for teasing me with big cuddly rats :P

BeenBeta · 21/08/2010 15:22

I suppose it might be a Coypu. I believe some escaped from fur farms in the UK, people keep them as pets too, and at one time and thay did use to live naturally in the wild in the UK but a long time ago.

I have seen a Capybara in the wild and they do look quite cute although have a pathological hatred of rats and exterminate with maximum prejudice when they get in our garden.

SummerRain · 21/08/2010 15:23

coypus don't exactly look that similar to rats that you could get them confused though do they Confused

Many animals grow to fit their environment and food source, and they're most likely measuring from nose to tip of tail so the rat's bodies would have been about a foot long.... still farking massive but a bit more believable.

FakePlasticTrees · 21/08/2010 15:30

Kaloki - now, don't that this the wrong way, but you're fucking mental love... (get a kitten, they are real pets, not rats, they are pests)

OP - I can't believe I have a new thing to be scared of, 2 foot rats!?!? How big a rat trap would you need for that? The normal sort of thing would just pinch off the end of their nose, so you'd have an angry giant rat running about the place... (still, it wouldn't be able to smell the fear)

Kaloki · 21/08/2010 15:33

Hehe, I love kittens too, but I'd feel cruel having cats in a top floor flat. Whereas our 7 rats are very sweet, and endlessly entertaining.

sharbie · 21/08/2010 15:42

def not a rat a copyu

prettybird · 21/08/2010 15:55

One of our cats has been catching mice, so when ds said yesterday morning "there's a dead mouse", dh and I both said "oh yes?" and thought nothing of it.

10 minutes later, we went to clear it up - and it was a bloody big rat! Shock (body at least 6 inches long - although it least not the giant size of the news report Grin)

Dh later said to me, "it's just as well the cat didn't bring it to us in bed as a present" Hmm

It doesn't bear thinking about........
