Keeping whites white

Can I add a mild solution of bleach to brighten up my sheets and try and bleach out stains? If so what sort of quantity and where do I put the solution.

Sorry forgot to say in the washing machine.

I have done this by putting the bleach in the liquid dispenser ball but the smell of the bleach stayed on the whites. I find it better to soak my whites for a couple of hours in the sink but I have a big butlers sink.
Net cutain whitener pouchy things are good in the washing machine!

I sometimes put a cap full of bleach in a cold rinse prior to doing a proper wash

only wash whites with whites... and napisan... it works wonders!
