I have just realised how overwhelmed I am by it all. I have boxes but just don't know where to begin, wheni moved in here all I had was a coffee table, my clothes, a portable tv and dds cot so I have never actually packed before ever.

Some packing tips would be appreciated.

Do one room at a time, starting with the stuff you use least. Use more newspaper to wrap than you imagine you need and mark clearly on the box where it needs to go in the new place and what's in there. Try to stack together stuff that's going to end up in the same place. Do it in short bursts so you dont get too exhausted.

How long til you move and how much stuff/how many rooms do you have to pack? Where are you? I love packing

I will have the place in 2 weeks and will properly move in in about 4. I am in SE London as I am only moving 5 mins walk up the road I am thinking I will take some of the smaller boxes up myself as I need to paint some of the rooms.

It would help if it wasn't so bloody hot my motivation is not high when it's sticky and horrible. I have 5 rooms to do so not so bad and moving to a place the same size but with a garage (my life long dream of storage space).

I hate packing, hate it, and know that overwhelmed feeling.

The only way I can get it done is as follows:

  1. pick a room
  2. pick out the things I know I will need between now and the actual move and put them somewhere prominent (I usually put them on my bed).
  3. start at one corner and just pack everything you come across (using all of ballstoit's suggestions above).
  4. at the end of the day, pack the things on your bed into a box/bag as appropriate so they are together.

Last time we moved we had the removal company pack for us and it is amazing how quickly they do it because they don't get paralysed by thinking (do I need this?, where should I put it? where's the missing bit? ah, I remember buying this etc). The above approach kind of does the same thing, you do the thinking in advance and then just pack!

Good Luck

I can't let someone pack for me. I get that same anal feeling I feel in the supermarket when someone tries to pack my bags for me

Another tip is to not go through stuff whilst packing, save all the chucking for the unpacking. You then don't need to worry about whether you need it/want it/use it/even remember what the heel it was for in the first place! It can just go in a bag or box and you can unpack at your leisure.

I have chucked everything I don't need or sold it. So I should be fine. It's amazing the amount of crap collected over 11 years.
