Waste disposal and other smells

There is one in the house we just moved into but I never use it. It smells sort of earthy.
I have put neat bleach down when we first moved in. It did stink more then. Since then I rinse it out about once a week with hot water and a good squirt of bleach, running the grinder thing or whatever it is.
The smell remains however.

Also I spilt a glass of water on the living room carpet and that has absolutely ponged over the last few days. Like sick! How do I get rid of that? I am loathe to wet it incase it smells worse.

With the disposal i would dissolve soda crystals in hot water and pour it in slowly and follow it with running hot water and dish liquid.

Maybe the water 'awoke' an old spill, have the carpet steam cleaned perhaps.

Oh yes I always forget soda crystals. Will try that. Not sure about the carpet. I might try bicarbonate of soda first [cheap]

I'm with soda crystals, great product! You could check the plumbing under the sink to see if there is a blockage, but it seems to be running OK so probably no problem there. Check the outside drain, involves lifting it up and cleaning out some muck but at least you will know then that it's all your own waste, if you get my drift. Waste disposals are great but need a good level of respect in what goes down them, nothing too fiberous and not solid fats unless you run lots of hot water at the same time + soda crystals! As has been suggested, the smelly carpet is likely to be a reawakened spill (or sick) shampoo it and use a solution of bicarb. Good luck and happiness in your new home!
