Oblomov · 14/07/2010 13:13

my dh hates ours. but as sooz says, all of them are rubbish, i think. its not like i know which other to buy.

papooshka · 16/07/2010 05:10

My handles went sticky too, I took it back to Mothercare and they sent it off to Maclaren and I got the handles replaced...however this was in Singapore so not sure about the UK...it cost the equivalent of about 25 quid, but it was so worth it as we are still using it loads.

Any news? I have the same problem, it's such a shame, because I really like the buggy otherwise! I can't find the email contact for finding a local repair agent, and don't want to have to send it away to Maclaren as then I won't have a buggy at all

Nettiespagetti · 01/08/2010 22:20

I forgot to ring service agent must put it on my to do list!!

I finally hauled it down to our local dealer as instructed by McClaren HQ. The chap took one look and said it was fair wear & tear - and even accused me of scraping the handles.

I asked if he'd seen this kind of erosion before - to which he admitted that he hadn't.

I calmly pointed out that, given he'd not seen it before, it probably wasn't normal wear and tear - and that the rubber was seriously degraded. (By this point DH and the DC's were hiding round a pillar as I was becoming increasngly icy of tone).

He informs me that McCLaren shuts at 2pm so nothing he can do until Monday but replacement of the handles is likely to cost me upwards of £60.

I await his call back with interest but am prearing myself to hack the remaining gooey rubber off with a knife and replace it with a foam handle of some kind.

So far, I am less than impressed.

duchess blardy hell £60.

I've been putting it off for ages! Hmmm good luck when you do hear.

I won't hold out much hope then when I do finally get to it!

I have this feeling going on the area code that it is miles away as well!!

Mine is doing this after 2.5 years, including the starting to get holes in it thing. Clearly is an issue whatever they say. I'm not wasting 60quid on it though as i doubt the buggy is worth that as i've used it so much! I think I'll get some handlebar tape stuff and try that.

Conundrumish · 25/08/2010 12:45

I would mail them this thread - they may take notice then.

In the meantime - a condom on each handle? Grin

DuchessOfAvon · 27/08/2010 18:18

Not heard back from them - they have had a week.

I'll call them on Monday then email this thread to McClaren for their comments.

pinkchick1 · 27/04/2011 20:58

Stroll-Air buggy handle covers. They come in 3 sizes. You can get them off amazon. They zip on and off and are washable. They are to protect you handles from damage. I am going to get some. This is a common problem, my Mclaren is annoying me so much now and its almost new. Went sticky after a week.

nannyl · 27/04/2011 21:23

every techno XT i have ever used has had the same handle issues.

as has every other techno that i have seen more than a few months od (ie friends buggys, that i dont use)

karenp73 · 23/09/2011 22:02

Hi, my 2008 Maclaren XT has developed sticky handles, I am gutted as I have hardly used my Maclaren. For the moment I have put a small amount of flour on them and it seems to have stopped the stickyness but I can't see it lasting any length of time. I am currently emailing Maclaren to see what they say. I have been quoted £25 for new handles.

DizzyPurple · 24/09/2011 15:14

Hi. I have a silver cross that is doing the same thing! Not good. Will try some of these suggestions - like the socks.. cheap and cheerful! Or the covers if not. Good to hear its not just me.

WorzselMummage · 24/09/2011 15:27

I love my XT and it has got sticky handles but it's not a massive problem and it's been used every day for almost 3 years and has done miles and miles and miles.. nothing lasts forever.

Maclarens response is particularly infuriating though.. the gits.

JMTrumpet · 14/11/2011 14:08

PROBLEM SOLVED! Here's the solution:

The stickiness is caused by the chemical breakdown of the rubberized material that is covering the plastic, almost like a coating of paint. Isopropyl Alcohol will clean this defective rubberized material off and then the handles will no longer be sticky. I used 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and it was a bit of work. A higher percentage solution would work faster and easier.

LittleJules · 27/08/2012 21:11

Hi all,

Thanks to your thread and my own problems with sticky Maclaren handles (sigh), I have made some Buggy Handle Socks. These are now for sale on Ebay if you are interested. Basically, it's just a simple but very stretchy sock that goes over the handles. I have made more than one size so they will also fit SilverCross, Graco and Mothercare which also seem to go sticky.

Original poster - as it was your idea that got me started, if you email me I will send you a free pair! Best wishes to all, Jules

JensonsMummyx · 26/02/2013 12:02

Hi ladies! Have exactly the same problem... You can't buy replacement handles for the techno XT the only way to solve this is to take your buggy to a maclaren service center they have one in maidenhead and ruislip, probably a lot more but there my closest! They repair or replace them there for £40.00. I'm taking mine today! Call them before to make an appointment! I called maclaren customer service directly and they gave me both numbers for the service centres! Hope this helps!

PigletJohn · 26/02/2013 17:42

if I was looking for a cheap solution, I would call in at an old fashioned bicycle shop and see if they have handlebar tape.

Kasia23w · 12/08/2015 16:44

Ladies and gentleman,
This is a product anyone should have in your houshold. It cleans sticky stroller handles, removes glue from tape, like duck tape, chewing gum and many, many more! Even from clothing withouth leaving oily spots! I just cleaned my Maclaren sticky handles and I am very happy about the effect ;-) good luck!
