Where do you keep your potatoes?

We get all our veg from a local farm shop so it all comes loose and I can't figure out where the best place is to keep the potatoes as we have a very small kitchen and space is limited!

So how does everyone else store your potatoes?

In the fridge.

BertieBotts · 16/06/2010 09:28

In a cloth bag in a cupboard. My mum has a tiny kitchen though and she uses a vegetable rack, again with a cloth bag to keep the light off them.

search potato bags on lakeland.com. they have nice ones that should prevent sprouting

BertieBotts · 16/06/2010 09:37

I just used the free bookstart bag

TrinityTrinityTrinity · 16/06/2010 09:39

in the fridge cause its garaunteed (I can't spell that) dark

Flighttattendant · 16/06/2010 09:39

In the fridge. They do sprout eventually though.

wifyhome · 16/06/2010 11:29

bottom of the cupboard/pantry we get through bag a week so they never have time to sprout

Ponders · 16/06/2010 11:31

In a cupboard which is in a NE corner so it's always cool.

Downdog · 16/06/2010 12:37

I keep them in a dark cupboard in kitchen but they go green/sprout really quickly. So now I try to buy them close to when we are going to eat them - which is rarely.

For some reason I thought potatoes/onions weren't supposed to be kept in fridge?

LooL00 · 16/06/2010 13:56

bertiebotts so do I! I have 2 dc so 2 bags.

catherinewho · 16/06/2010 20:51

I didn't think they were supposed to be kept in the fridge either which is why I can't find anywhere to put them!

Thanks for the ideas guys

In a big open terracotta pot in the bottom of the dark larder cupboard.

If we buy a sack of them in the winter they are kept in an outbuilding and then we just top up the terracotta pot when its empty.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/06/2010 21:00

In the bottom of one of our kitchen units - it's an ikea kitchen and DH fitted a sort of open drawer thing. Keep onions, carrots etc in there too.

ThingOne · 16/06/2010 21:36

In the fridge most of the year as I don't have anywhere cold and dark. In the winter they are in the veg rack with a teatowel over the top to make it dark. When I can afford to re-do my kitchen/utility/dining "room" I will be making sure there is a cold, dark, dry place for my root veg!

Thank you for asking this question. Normally in the fridge but you've just reminded me my husband said he'd put a huge bag of them in the cupboard behind the pans as there was no room in the fridge. that was a week ago. Wonder if they're sprouting yet!
