Help with really grubby carpet

Boring subject I know!!

Sitting room carpet is really grubby, a general greyish tinge due to DH never taking his shoes off (have had words and he's promised to stop!) and a few odd stains I'd rather not consider but suspect the majority are food or drink related.

Have borrowed a Vax Rapide Spring Clean but am not sure what detergent to use it - is the Vax solution worth the money or is there anything better out there??

Specifically interested in the best way to get the odd spot stains that have turned black!

Thanks and I'm honestly not a total slattern

I used the Rug Doctor detergent when I borrowed a vax rapide. It worked reasonably well, but it hasn't lasted (think cream carpet with added giraffe print style DIY pattern courtesy of 2 under four plus dog)

I have no idea where all the black stains come from either! I found spot cleaning with Carpet Power spray is pretty good, but then the clean spots are very noticeable

Thanks - have resigned myself to needing to keep cleaning it regularly. Have spot clean a couple of the worse stains this evening and your right about them standing out a mile!!
