use shampoo (about a tablespoon). if you use biological powder you will get holes.
I put the garment into an old pillowcase with zip and put on wool cycle without spin.

Sonilaa thank you - I use non bio fairy, do you think that eould be ok? Am concerned about shampoo being too high foam?

no prob in the wool cycle as it only gently moves the garments.

I use the Ecover liquid as most of the other liquids say that they cant be used on silk.
I have a handwash cycle on my washing machine, so I just wash it on that, have not had any problems.

I use the pink Woolite and place the item in a net bag (you can buy them at Lakeland / John Lewis) - always wash on delicate setting & if you are not sure go for Cold rather than 30 degrees.

Many thanks for the advice, I feel a lot more confident about washing my new silk top now!

you should use shampoo, as silk is the same thing as hair.

My mum washed a silk top of mine this week while I was at work on a silk/delicates cycle with fairy non-bio - I was horrified but it's perfect. I'm wearing it right now!
