Decluttering the Mug Cupboard... what horrors lurk in yours?

fluffyhamster · 06/06/2010 18:13

Friends always seem to have dainty, co-ordinated, bone china, new-looking and unscratched mugs when we visit.

Meanwhile, I fling open our mug cupboard and find....

  • a red Nescafe mug from the 1980s
  • 2 mugs with pics of DS1's friends from a laser party
  • a promotional Dulux mug (used for builders when they come)

and a rag bag collection from various places we've been, or promotional items we've acquired...

What's lurking in your mug cupboard?

We only have two matching mugs but we have about twenty of them. None of them are dainty/floral thank god.

I do have one with 'yummy, scrummy, mummy' which the DC/DH bought me last mother's day and I got really cross because I thought it said 'yummy scummy mummy'

crockydoodle · 07/06/2010 09:30

Noticed my Mum still has the Garfield mug in her cupboard (still used regularly) that my friend bought me about 25 years ago for my birthday.

MargaretAtwood3660 · 07/06/2010 09:35

our worst is a cartoon rude elephant

this is not actually in the REAL mug cupboard but carefully concealed in the egg cup cupboard. Which is nice.

MargaretAtwood3660 · 07/06/2010 09:35

I mean it is SHAPED like an elephant

it is all lumpy and stuff

DramaInPyjamas · 07/06/2010 09:43

Quite a collection of mugs you get with Easter Eggs.
We have no matching mugs anymore actually.

And a personalised one I got for a Birthday - With my name SPELT WRONG!

My favourite (which isn't allowed in the mug cupboard) is one of those MASSIVE 'Friends' coffee cups.

boogeek · 07/06/2010 09:43

I have a lumpy non-rude elephant mug that was clearly designed by a moron as it has a hollow trunk! Which fills with the hot drink and makes the mug impossible to pick up. Sigh. Can't throw it away though: there are Rules. It lurks unused.

MargaretAtwood3660 · 07/06/2010 09:44

I am worried now in case there are twqo of these in the universe. Shall we compare pictures?

MargaretAtwood3660 · 07/06/2010 09:47

Okay ours is not this one but the actual mug itself is shaped like the picture

boak

boogeek · 07/06/2010 09:49

No no - mine is shaped as the whole elephant with its trunk as the handle . Which fills with hot liquid.

boogeek · 07/06/2010 09:49

(why is it rude?)

MargaretAtwood3660 · 07/06/2010 09:50

i can't tell you that. I just can't. I might have to be sick if I tell you that.

[screams and goes to smash mug with big hammer]

DramaInPyjamas · 07/06/2010 09:55

A mug cupboard?

There's a tree with 6 of them hanging from it.

That's it.

OliviaMumsnet · 07/06/2010 10:59

I have a mug drawer
I have 2 Mumsnet mugs and one with my name on that I had made at a craft fayre in 1994 that I can't bear to throw out
I don't have dainty and floral
I do have a horrific purple ronnie one about needing hugs that a mate bought for a boyfriend that she then decided was a bit stalkerish and then gave to me
It reads I want you to know, That I think you are great, And although I'm a bit of a mug, If you ever need me, I'll always be near, To come round and give you a hug.

fluffyhamster · 07/06/2010 11:11

Oooh goody- more postings.

I still have a "I'm naturally blond (sic), please speak slowly" mug which a former boyfriend bought me... (why? & why do I still have it?)

And a Thunderbirds Lady Penelope one, which DH & th ekids bought me...

Also have one with a china frog INSIDE, so when you're halfway through a cup of coffee you suddenly see a frog peering up at you (nice...)

Then I also have about 2 left of each of our last 3 china sets, so two black Habitat ones, 2 blue Royal Dalton.

Quite frankly it's a disaster.... but I can't bring myself to chuck them.... they have sentimental value....

Margaret - we have a Camel one like your Elephant one... but I managed to give it to DS2's 'jungle-themed' room as a toothbrush holder!

ProfYaffle · 07/06/2010 11:18

I'm quite ruthless with mugs but dh is oddly sentimental about them. We have a Garfield 'Disco Cat' mug he refuses to part with as someone bought it for his 21st birthday (10 years ago ) and a stupid, stupid, stupid, enormous Sports Direct mug that's too big to go in the dishwasher and too portly for the mug cupboard too. I loathe the thing with a passion.

Now dd1 has started with her own collection of cups with Hannah Montannah and the like on them.

pookamoo · 07/06/2010 11:18

I also have a birthday one with my name spelt wrong. It has a chip in it, and yet still I keep it...

ProfYaffle · 07/06/2010 11:18

That should read 19 years ago, not 10 (he should be so lucky)

expatinscotland · 07/06/2010 11:42

Oh god! All these naff mugs would drive me round the twist. I'll be happy to come round your houses, take all your naff, ugly mugs and smash them in your garden with my aluminium baseball bat.

Then you can make some very cupcake bunting picture frames or tables or mirror frames with the shards.

You won't even have to thank me.

BudaisintheZONE · 07/06/2010 11:50

I like matching sets. Unfortunately we then always break one of the set.

Have 5 stripey mugs that I like tea in.
Have 4 black mugs that DH uses.
Have 5 Polish Pottery mugs - 2 each of two styles style and one of another - hope to buy the match of that tomorrow.
DS has a Lego one with his name on
10 various other ones that I like soup or coffee in but not tea.
One that says "We are not gossiping we are networking" given to me by a friend
A china pretty one that was given to me by a friend that tea taste funny out of

I have too many mugs.

boogeek · 07/06/2010 11:56

ProfYaffle we have the sports direct one! So they send it to everybody who buys a sodding T-shirt? I hate the damn thing, was going to put it in the charity bag as soon as it arrived but DH spotted and though ooh (he likes a large vase of tea, it seems; hadn't mentioned it for the past 15 years but never mind that). I am going to have to break it.
Margaret Am so intrigued by the rude elephant. Whisper it? Do its clothes come off when the drink is hot?

helyg · 07/06/2010 11:58

I have thre of those horrible Sports Direct mugs Prof, they seem to send them (for free, wonder why?) every time I order sports kit online, and DS1&2 love them.

I also have a "Yummy Mummy" mug, which the DC bought me one mother's day, but I am too ashamed to use in company... to be fair it was a charity mug (CLIC I think), but still, Yummy Mummy ?

There is also a Yorkie "Not for Girls" mug in there which came with an Easter Egg that DH had one year.

My favourite mugs are my growing set of these but DH hates them.

We also have these which go with our "best" crockery set (wedding present). They don't get used every day though.
