Is there such a thing as a failsafe carpet stain remover/cleaner? Have spent so much money over the yrs on products which don't work and as of yest now have an ink stain and spilt beer stain to tackle. Am v wary of sprays - liquids always seem to make matters worse - so recently bought expensive eco-friendly stuff that you sprinkle over, brush in then vacuum away - hasn't worked either! Any tips much appreciated.

I've got a dog wee stain which won't budge either!

Vanish. I find that to be the best. But I use it with a Vax Carpet Cleaner. I don't know how effective it is with just elbow grease.

with ink I reckon you will hve to use specialist ink remover.

Carpet power by OzKleen is fantastic. It even got rid of the horrendous stain when DS1 threw a bowl of Heinz tomato soup over the carpet.

Vanish stain removing stick. Got curry sauce on the carpet (stupid open plan kitchen/living room) 1001 just smooshed it in more, but vanish took it straight out in about 20 seconds.

I've been using bio wash liquid (or powder)on my carpets/rugs - dilute in bowl of really really hot water, don gloves and rub.
Fetched out make-up, mouse blood/guts stains and pasta sauce.
(I use the colour wash on the red rug)

all the professionals I've ever spoken to (and we were serial renters for years so often were getting end of tenancy professional carpet cleaners in) all said, without exception....don't use them...as they effectively bleach one area and make problem worse........or maybe they were just trying to sell more cleans
