I got this little pot (can't remember name but you can get in hardware shops/garden centres) that you put on floor and they go and in and take stuff back to their nest which kills them. Children can't get into it - it's just a white box.

Thank you I will buy some tomorrow

Think it was Nippon Ant Bait. Google it. Worked really well.

nowwearefour · 27/05/2010 13:48

yes i was going to recommend those too. make sure you follow the instructions though as we left them down for a week or so before realising you have to press the gel stuff in the middle down or up or something. they are great. but still are poison so still dont let toddlers touch them.

Thank you for your advice

sprinkle borax around - it kills ants but is non toxic to children, cats etc.

Boiling water on the nest

They had this as a topic on the radio here a while back and more than one person rang in to say that you write the ants a letter asking them to move somewhere else. Apparently this worked!
Don't know if I'd be willing to bet on it though!

amummyinwaiting · 30/05/2010 10:52

cloves are supposed to stop them coming back again ince you have got rid of them the first time.

lucykate · 30/05/2010 10:59

just use nippon, it is the only way to really get rid of a nest. things like boiling water will just kill the live, worker ants, the nest will be full of unhatched eggs which will mean the nest continues.

don't be tempted to kill the ants with ant powder though, you need them to eat the poison and take it back to the nest, they then make food from it for the rest of the nest, within 24hours, you'll notice the nest is quieter. but watch out for it reappearing 3 weeks later when new eggs hatch. but if you do the same with this lot, that should be it gone as most likely the queen will be already dead so no more eggs can be made. i am an ant expert, we've had so many ants nests in our house

ppeatfruit · 01/06/2010 12:45

I use old lemon halves and they don't like them especially when they go a bit rotten !!

BlackYellowRed · 01/06/2010 12:49

Only thing that worked in our house was the little box where they take it back to the nest. Powders and sprays only helped for a little while, then they would return.

belgo · 01/06/2010 12:50

Boiling water destroys the nest but kills the grass too.

Sprinkle baby talc around where the ants are coming in. Works inside and outside. They don't like the feel of it on their legs and move off elsewhere and you're not killing them.

Funkycherry · 02/06/2010 07:29

Bought a pack of two round black things from Wilkinsons (can't remember what they're called sorry.) Put them buy the back door and ants were gone in less than 2 days.
As others have said they eat the stuff and it gets taken back to the nest. The reason I chose these is because the 'poison stuff' is inside they were safe to use with our dog.

whomovedmychocolate · 02/06/2010 07:50

Big bag of cinnamon, sprinkle it round the perimeter of your house - they get burnt legs from the oil in it when they try and cross and bugger off.

And smells nice.
