Carpet stains (fairly urgent)

I know this has probably been done to death, but I'm going to ask again anyway.
We live in a rented house, and the carpets in the living room have HUGE stains on them. The main one is an old stain, and it's fairly big. It's a pretty cheap carpet, it looks like underlay , that really crappy short stuff, and it's a beigy brown colour. The stain is grey/black, and covers quite a big area. At the moment we have it covered with a rug, but I don't want the rug there (it's by the sofa) and was wondering if you could all tell me the best carpet cleaning/stain removing item you have come across. I would like it clean by Saturday if possible, so I can do repeat treatments until then. I'm going out in a while to stock up on cleaning products (doing a big spring clean ready for friends with a SPOTLESS house coming round on Saturday) so quick replies would we helpful.
I need something that's easy to find in a supermarket/chemist type place, as I can't drive so can only get to the nearest shopping centre.
Thankyou very much in advance.
Oh, and any other cleaning products that you couldn't live without now you've found them would also be helpful

I used the Vanish large area carpet cleaner to try and fade a port stain and it did a reasonable job. You'll need a bit elbow grease to work it in though. Still not perfect but I reckon about 80% improvement. If you didn't know it was there you wouldn't see it IYSWIM.

I've tried them all and actually find the Tesco own brand fbric stain removing spray excellent.

Anything greasy is usually sorted with Fairy liquid though
