Shade for the garden without trees

We have a big garden with a hedge along one side, but during the summer the light comes from above and it doesn't provide much shade.

I have planted a few trees on the sides of the garden and there are already a lot at the end, but their shade doesn't fall on our lawn.

So far the ideas I have had are shade sails - but these were awful and I sent them back, because they didn't work for us.

We tried a big bell tent but it was way too hot inside.

Then I got a hexagonal gazebo from Argos, which has worked in as far as it provides a section of shade under it - it's not ideal but is the best thing so far. I hope we get away with leaving it up all summer, as I have a feeling it might blow away!
Does anyone have any further suggestions? I try and avoid the hottest part of the day anyway, we just leave the doors wide open from living room through conservatory and the kids play in here.

But I'm interested to hear what others have done with a West facing garden.

Sorry no advice , just wanted to also see what some suggestions are. Our garden gets no shade whatsoever from 7am till about 5pm. The only thing I have at the moment is a kids gazebo thing over my ds's paddling pool but not great for me when I have to sit out in the blazing sun to keep an eye on him.

A friend has a free standing parasol which she moves around the garden as the sun moves. Any good? We have a similar problem, so am sad to hear the sail thingys didn't work - I know the dog would wee up a parasol pole

Freestanding parasol sounds great, but how does it stand up?

I think if you do shade sails right, with correct supports and proper poles etc they are probably great, but I bought two cheapo ones and they were so poorly made and not even a proper triangle - the edges were all wobbly, couldn't get them straight at all.

I think the expensive ones could be useful.

The gazebo we have is this one and it is very good actually.

I have a wall mounted canopy above my french doors, I have a South facing garden and it gets so warm...the canopy is good, it shades the dinning room and the patio area, during the winter we just wind it back up against the wall.

That sounds good Kaekae and also I like the canopy in Coasting's link. Not too ££ either.
