giant magnetic board for kitchen

I would like to a large area of our kitchen wall into a giant magnetic board for the usual kids pictures, school notes, memos & play magnets.

Obvious answer maybe would be magnetic paint, but the walls here are bibbly bobbly, as seem to be all internal walls in germany, switzerland etc. don't know why they just are, but anyway, think this will render magnetic paint unsuable.

So where can I get something - and what? - to make such a big magnetic memo wall in kitchen Talking eg 2m x 2m here)

I have got a HUUUUGE corkboard in my kitchen for just this purpose. I put some old wrapping paper and birthday cards on it as a sort of backdrop and then I put the dc's delightful artwork and other things on there. It looks really good and I think that because parts of it are more permanent and structured if you see what I mean it looks tidier. I was sticking everything on the fridge before and it looked a mess all of the time.

ooh, hadn't thought of cork. Where did you get it or how did you make it and fix it to wall?

It had tiny hooks on the back, like cup hooks, that screw into the frame at the back and then wire to stretch across to hang it on nails. We used 'Command' sticky velcro though. I live in Australia so I can't help you with where to get one though.

Would a school supplies website maybe have one? EG the big whiteboards they use instead of blackboards are probably magnetic.

Or office supplies. We have a huge one which we obtained when DH's place of work closed.

those are good ideas, but they are quite big as in thick. I wanted something thin and flush so that it would just look part of the wall ideally. Magnetic paint would be ideal, but with our bibbly bobbly walls I don't think it would work.

That internal render is a real PITA isn't it.

If you are feeling very energetic you could chip of all the rendering and then sand down the wall behind!

Drink lots and lots of wine. Save the corks from the bottles. Cut the corks in half and stick them to a big bit of board(e.g chipboard or MDF).

Voila, a big cork board.

And a hangover.

Well, the walls are not yet rendered, so I guess I could ask if they could just do 1 wall smooth (did ask about whole house and was told it would be £££££££ to have smooth walls)

They already think I'm a mental foreigner with funny ideas.

Oh, I'm not sure what kind of walls you are talking about then. In this part of France, in the 70s I think, it was the fashion to have 'bibbly bobbly' rendering inside the houses. The kind that grazes you if you accidentally brush up against it. I assumed that was what you had.

yes, that's exactly it, bleeding knuckles if you walk too close to the walls.

House not yet built so had asked about having 'proper' smooth walls à l'anglaise, but £££. Apparently.

Perhaps there are no trained plasterers?

If all the new houses have bumpy render, does that mean no-one puts up wall-paper?
