Cleaning icky black clay pavers without bleach?

They are supposed to be a nice terracotta colour but horridly discoloured; Fil just wants at them with the bleach which is admittedly effective but then just washes into the garden and my bleeding green heart just can't be having that.

Eco-tips please

Hire a pressure washer. Please don't bleach them!

oh, that's good thinking! no I'm not impressed with the use of bleach but Fil (who, bless him, is after all voluntarily cleaning my house for me!) is a Believer in chemical warfare. If I want it done I've got to come up with a suitable alternative...

Pressure washing is good fun but messy. But at least its only water.

well exactly. I will not need to be so stressed about 3yo desperate to help his grandpa!
