Bloody seives...

I hate my sieve.

It's one of those shiney metal jobs with a solid rim and it seems that it is impossible to use it without getting stuff stuck under this rim and impossible to get subsequent stuck stuff back out when cleaning it.

I've tried cleaning it by hand and sticking it through the dishwasher but neither seems satisfactory.

I'm going to bin it. Anyone have a better sieve they can recommend?

i am VERY happy with my asda smartprice sieve

cost about 60p 4 years ago i think and i have no "issues" with it what so ever.... and i use it lots!!!

I had a crappy cheap plastic one from Wilkos that was all melted and ugly and horrible, and I was so pleased when it finally got so battered I could justify buying a nice shiny stainless steel one...and it's crap! Veg dries onto it so it's unwashable, it doesn't actually drain water out of stuff properly, it's basically just a huge disappointment. I wish I'd never ditched the old one now.

I realised I am thinking of colanders. Disregard the above.

This one will no doubt be a John Lewis super expensive job. It was here with DH before I moved in so she'll have bought it and she only shops there!

I have two value sieves from Tesco. Green plastic with no handles (makes them much easier to store in the cupboard). No lips for dirt to hide in. They go in the dishwasher every day, and are fine 4 years later!

It seems the cheaper ones are better.

I think the problem with this one is that it has been given a wide, shiney band around the top to make it look pretty but all it has done is create a little crevice into which the little bits of food you are sieving out can get stuck. What I need is something less pretty and more practical.

Will have a look in Tesco or IKEA next time I'm in.

Obviously cheap and cheerful is the way to go!

Cheap & cheerful metal one from IKEA (from 3 pack of diff' sizes) still going strong after 13 years! Goes in dishwasher and comes out clean.

We've got one with a wide metal band around the top too so I know what you mean. Its a right PITA.

I prefer using the colander wherever possible.

I'm going to go and buy some cheap ones. I use my colander whenever I can manage too - or my half moon shaped pan drainer thing - but you can drain rice in a colander unfortuneatly.

Posibly a bit scare-mongery - BUT, my metal sieve (unbeknownst to me) started to fall to bits. First I realised of it was finding sharp metal wire in the muffins the children and I made and had started to eat!! Luckily it was in my muffin - needless to say we had throw the entire batch away!

Seives really are a pita I have a cheap plastic one for baking only(I had to put a label on it to stop dh using it) He thinks I've lost my mind.

The metal ones I find have to be washed straight away or the bits get stuck and are really hard to wash.

Hmmm, are plastic bits any safer than metal bits??

The one thing the new sieve has to be is dishwasher safe

I need a cheap plastic one too - one with bigger holes in it for sieving my Jamie Oliver posh popcorn sugar stuff. Damn stuff takes forever to coax through the metal sieve but I'm really not keen on getting big chunks of clove in my teeth if I don't sieve it at all.
