Help, iron spitting out brown gunk

mistressploppy · 05/05/2010 10:03

I've descaled it 3 times and it's still doing it, how can I clean it out properly? It's quite a new iron. We have terrible limescale here so I presume it's that.

Also, any ideas for preventing limescale in the first place? Can I do something to the water before putting it in?

TIA

Do you use tap or deionised bottled water?

Does it have a removable filter?

Do more/longer descale cycles until clear?

Oh, hello!

Tap water, hence the problem. I did another descale today, it's still spitting brown stuff.

I think I'll just buy a new one. If I use normal bottled water, that will prevent the problem, no?

I usually give it a really good steaming , you know press the steam buttton so it goes mad puffing

Oh and iron everything inside out

I have the same - bought cleaning cloths for it but nothing worked, intresting to know if it's because I use tap water

I think you need to used distilled water.

mistressploppy · 05/05/2010 22:29

You could try buying Ironing Water

I used to get this all the time, but now I use water from the kettle (after boiling) and haven't had any problems... maybe that is just luck though.

I buy Ironing Water in Waitrose. Also: when you're finished ironing pour the water out. Don't leave it in. Descale regularly.

My guess is yours is rotting from inside (rust). Time to get a new one, sorry.

You can get 5 litres of distilled water online. It works out cheaper than those 1 litre bottles of ironing water. My pharmacy also gets it for me. I hate the brown muck. I ruined some nice shirts before I discovered distilled water.
