Can a washing machine take on a life of its own

Help!

My washing machine has just shrink my jumpers. Definitely was on a wool wash and the same setting that I've washed them on 100 times before. No dryer setting, low spin.

bugger bugger bugger.

our old wm (rented with flat) suddenly started to boil things. water was really bubbling away in a rolling boil.
could convince landlord to part with some cash todwards a new maschine...but scary when you enter the kitchen and can*t see because of the steam.
