How to get rid of ants

Have killed about 10 today by wrestling them with my bare hands. Obviously this isn't a long term solution, so what do I do once it's time to hang up my boxing gloves?

When I lived in a more tropical place people used to use some type of antkiller which was sweet to attract them, the ants would carry it back to the nest and it kills the whole lot (in theory). I have just used a powder here - have a look in a DIY place or hardware store and see what they have?

I have used the sort of thing decorhate describes. It sounded good in theory, except the whole bloody kitcen was covered by the little blighters as they were all attracted to it.
Now, I just use an ant spray from B and Q. It kills them instantly and seems to stop them from comimg back in for a bit. I spray it along the bottom of the doors in the conservatory which is where they were coming in.
