Turny bit fallen off shoe polish!

The turny bit that you turn to open tins of shoe polish has fallen off - how on earth do I open it now?! Have tried prising it with a knife, but that didn't work. Tried sticking the turny bit back on, but that didn't work. Tin is quite new and so is still tightly closed, so just trying to haul the top off doesn't work. I could (maybe) use a tin opener, but that would be horrendously messy . Anyone got any ideas?!

have you tried running it under really hot water? i've had this before with some zam buk i had to make a hole in the top in the end

If you hit it hard enough to dent the side of the tin, it should come off. Will probably mean you can't get lid on and airtight again though.
