cheap duvets - bargain or yuck

i need a lighter weight duvet as i'm baking at the mo.

however we're also a bit skint.

is it a false economy to get a cheap one or are the more expensive ones worth it?

NB we would never buy a feather type one as dh is allergic

I bought a cheap one for DS1, it's awful. The stuffing bunches up in places and it's hard to fluff out iyswim?

I think that's the main difference between cheap and expensive duvets-cheap ones are thinner and have synthetic fillings. But in this case that's what you are after.
Get yourself a supermarket one and save your pennies.

Marks & Spencer do a cheap synthetic duvet that is fine (we have one for our single blow-up bed as a spare for emergencies). I personally would favour a proper goose down duvet, which is what we have on our bed and the guest bed, but if your DH is allergic then you're going to have synthetic anyway so I'd say the M&S ones are perfectly fine and no more expensive than the supermarket ones if you get the 'value' one they do - and mine doesn't bunch up inside, the filling is quite good and it doesn't look lumpy in the way that the cheap Asda one we had before used to.

Depends how cheap you mean. The very cheapest ones are interfacing material stuffed with hollow fibre filling. Those are yuck.
The slightly higher priced hollow fibre ones with cotton covering are quite adequate I find, especially for a thin summer duvet. And machine washable too which is always a bonus in hot weather.

I have got a cheap and cheerful Sainsbos summer duvet cover, iirc it cost me £8 and it is fine. Doesn't bunch up or anything.

The one I was talking about above is a cheap Sainsburys one.

Definately steer clear of Asda (Smartprice) ones, they are worse than awful! Argos ones are OK, but we've only bought single ones for the girls ...

I have a cheap summer tog duvet and an expensive snuggly one for the winter. Both are fine but I agree with one of the earlier posters, the expensive ones seem to sit nicer

Down filled no. Buy cheap buy twice.

Any synthetic duvet to me is yak! We have feather duvets here. Good investment.

If you're after a nonallergenic duvet then I really couldn't recommend the spundown duvet highly enough. Both my boys have them. You can put them on a 60 degree wash which apparently kills the dust mites - so good for allergies. In my case they're perfect as I basically end up washing the duvet everytime one of my boys wets the bed!!. The thing is you can wash them yourself rather than have to take them to the launderette (as all sizes fit into a your home washing machine). They're really lightweight and very, very soft and squishy, so definitely worth the extra pennies, compared to a cheaper supermarket duvet!

One other thing re: non-allergenic duvets - microfibre filling much better than hollowfibre, it's just sooooooo much lighter and softer.

All ours are cheap from either Asda or Argos, all absolutely fine, never had any problems with bunching up either.

All ours are cheap supermarket ones, and they've always been fine.

Having read the horrendous piece recently about goose feather duvets, I would never, ever buy one on ethical grounds, unless I was 100% certain of it's origin.
