Carpet cleaners

Can anyone recommend a good carpet cleaner? We have just moved in and the lounge and playroom carpet is filthy. It's a through room so all one carpet and I can't afford to replace it yet. Plus I think it would be a lovely carpet once it was clean.

You can't see the dirt as it's a dark carpet but DD is crawling and her trousers are black after a few hours.

I was thinking of hiring the rug doctor from Morrisons but wondered if it was worth buying my own? Especially with having 2 toddlers!

Or are there any cleaning products I could buy that would do a good job on the whole carpet rather than spot cleaning?

Thanks

we have a vax carpet cleaner and really love it, it was a good buy because we can clean the carpet when we want. we have a cream carpet and it works wonders on that, you know it's doing it's job when you empty the filthy water from it, so it kind of makes it satisfactory in the end, so my vote would be to invest

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering if investing in my own was the best option! I'm not used to carpets, we had laminate floors in the old place which were so easy to sweep and mop in comparison.

Do you know which ones are the best out there? There seems to be quite a few to choose from.
