Question about slow cookers

TALLULAHBELLE · 11/04/2010 03:39

I mentioned to MIL that I was thinking about getting a slow cooker. I was planning on doing a bit of research first but she went out and got us one anyway. Not that I'm not grateful but it is huge, has 6 litre capacity & the recipe book that comes with it has recipes for between 10 and 16 people. We are 2 adults, 3 DC's (all under 3). So, I am wondering if it will be efficient for cooking much smaller amounts or if I should try & see if I can change it for a smaller model. Any advice?

We are a family of four and I'd originally bought a smaller one and swapped it for a 6 litre one.
Definately not too big.
You get used to cooking without a recipe and you just cook as much as you want.
The main rule is just to make sure you always have 2 inches at least of liquid always in it.
Slow cookers are the best!
And if you cook a bit extra you don't have to cook tomorrow night. I love it!

6l isn't that big, ours is 5.5 ! As the kids get older you will be grateful for the extra space. Make enough for 2 meals or great for whole joints.

If you cook a meal in the slow cooker and you have some left over just pop it in a container and keep in the fridge for a couple of days and then reheat really well and have for dinner agian - less cokking that way

Mine is a 6l one and I cook to the recipe for 6 people and freeze what we don't eat. Great for when you can't be arsed cooking, just get a tasty meal out of the freezer.

Always cook loads, then freeze!!

Mine is 5.5l I cook loads then freeze it or sometimes just buy a jar of curry sauce and some meat and make a meal for the 3 of us. I?d definitely keep the 6l one.

Thanks for advice. Have kept it. So far have cooked smallish amounts & it seems fine. Bit hit & miss - Ok stew, brill chilli & disasterous cauli soup. Guess it's trial & error.

Do you always have to add hot liquid to whatever is in to start with?
