Smelly Rug

Have inherited a beautiful antique Indian wool rug with great sentimental value. Unfortuately the previous owner had dogs. Have had rug cleaned and it looks great but still smells decidedly doggy.

Help- what can I do to get rid of the smell?

You could try dusting it liberally with bicarbonate of soda, brushing it into the pile, leaving overnight and then vacuuming.

You can also sprinkle ground cinnamon when you sprinkle the bicarb, but I would only do that to a dark or colourful rug, not a pale one, in case you don't manage to pick up all of the cinammon when you hoover it.

Or, if we ever get a few good sunny days, hanging it out in the sunshine for several days (bringing it in at night, of course).

sprinkle with bicarb and leave for as lond as possible - then hoover off , if it cant be hoovered take it outside and brush off then let it air for as long as possible. .
i wouldnt use febreeze on it, because its an antique and you dont want to damage it.

thanks I will try the bicarb - looking at the weather I don't hold out much hope for airing it any time soon!
