Just spent a lot of money on the Northcote Storage System from the Great Little Trading Company. We were hoping to finally get all the STUFF in order. I had to put the order through twice since I'd missed the box the enter a code for a 15% discount. Although I called to give the code over the phone I was told I had to cancel the whole order, wait until the next day and re-order.

This done, the boxes arrived and my husband is putting the shelving units together. The lists of contents do no correspond the what is actually in any of the boxes. The instructions are nonsense and out of date (eg telling you where to insert non-existent dowling rods). Both of us have assembled flat pack furniture for years. He has made shelving units himself. We are Ikea experts and made our own kitchen with the Ikea system. When DH called to complain about the obvious lack of quality control the customer 'service' man said 'We can't help it if the instructions are too difficult for you'. Charming attitude. DH is a fast worker with this kind of thing and entirely capable - more than most.

The manager whom we were promised twice would call us back, has never called. The system is poor quality with thin easily chipped veneers. This is despite the unbelievable amount of polystyrene packaging.

We no longer live near an Ikea - we are quite remote - so we are persevering with the whole thing but it will clearly take a lot longer than usual.

I have ordered from GLTC before and might buy other products but I cannot recommend this storage system to anyone and think the level of customer service is the worst I have come across. Does Mumsnet still have any influence over this company since we are clearly not important enough as individual customers who have just given the company over a thousand pounds of savings.

That's interesting. I was looking at these but eventually plumped for the JoJoMaman storage cubes which though less flexible were a lot cheaper.

They came quickly and I managed to put 9 cubes together in the space of a couple of afternoons even with DD (aged 2) 'helping'.

A couple did have chips on the veneer though and DH would probably have insisted we send them back, but seeing as he's away at the moment, I've just kept them as I've assumed DD will eventually scuff them anyway.

they sound terrible, I shan't be ordering from them...thanks for the warning.
Hope you get the units up Ok.

We bought the same furnishings - I have never had such a frustrating day trying to put the furniture together with useless instructions that made no bloody sense - the air was blue and it was in danger of being tossed out the window and I don't think DH and I are unable to follow instructions

Some of the fittings on the pamphlet are actually packaged together iyswim - they need to be taken out of the sockets to be put on the furniture. It took us a while to figure that one out

We actually moaned about the length of time it took for us to get the delivery and how vile the instructions were but we have never had a response...

The furniture on the whole from GLTC is epensive and so bad - we bought my daughter a storage/book unit which had shoddy instructions and so bad to put together - wish we hadnt given the co. another chance ...

I hope you get some resolution from GLTC, but I am loathe to buy from the place .

Incidentally, I see that Aspace is also selling similar units, but there is the option of having them already assembled - with different coloured doors Here but a bit at their prices

I recently bought 2 bookcases for the DCs from there and was quite appalled by the quality. One just wouldn't fit together as none of the holes aligned so that got sent back.

I also bought DS the bi-plane shelf but the wheel axel on the bottom was missing - totally cosmetic but making the shelves look like an aeroplane was the point of buying it for him.

They said the aeroplane was no longer being stocked so they couldn't send another one to me but I received their new catalogue yesterday and guess what - it's still in there!!!

We also ordered one of their storage units and although it took AGES to arrive we are very pleased with so not all bad.

Itsjustafleshwound · 16/03/2010 17:48

There was also an old thread so this seems to be an ongoing problem - it was started in 2006 and the company still hasn't got it's show on the road

Will persevere with trying to get a response from the crap customer service team but if they've been trying for that long they haven't got much hope.

I have cancelled previous orders with them as their customer service is so awful. Again, same as the OP, I tried to put in the discount code - couldn't see where to enter the code, and they refused to honor the discount code even when I e-mailed them within seconds of submitting the order. I cancelled the order, and am waiting for a refund, over a year later, despite several phone calls and assurances they will process the refund.

I boycott GLTC.

this is really bad. It was started by 2 mums. Do they still run it or did they sell it on? Sounds like they probably did.
