Can I restore my leather handbags? How?

Am de-cluttering my wardrobe and have found a couple of black leather handbags which I stopped using because they were getting a bit 'worn'- i.e. the black was looking tired and patchy.

I'm sure Ive heard about people restoring leather handbags, but haven't a clue where to start.
I'm worried about putting e.g. shoe polish on them, as I'm sure it will just rub off on my clothes?

Anyone done this? Is there a 'proper procedure'. Are there 'products'?

saddle soap!

Does that clean them?
What about making them black again?

It's what Kim & Aggie use on leather sofas... Maybe clean them with a damp cloth first.

I am lurking here, as my favourite black handbag is now grey! Any ideas?
