Cutlery discoloured

Hi,
My MIL has a set of Viners cutlery which she's had for several years but just recently, she's noticed that they've started to discolour - like a blackish colour. This is especially noticable on the desert spoons. She's always put them in the dishwasher but has only noticed this discolouration recently. She's always used the same tablets. Any ideas anyone as to why this may have happened and how to get rid of it?

What are they made of - stainless steel or silver plated ? The salt in dishwashers is not kind to cutlery and it is recommedned that they are taken out and wiped dry rather than left damp.

Thanks Lizs. They're made of stainless steel. Have heard about this too.

They've had them for approx 18 years so maybe it is just repeated dishwashing that's done it.
