Tar staining on light pull cord--can anything get rid of this?

Obviously for the lower part I can get a new cord, but for the bit of cord that goes into the fixture, is there anything I can do to get rid of the yucky brown tar staining? Neat bleach maybe? How would I apply it without dripping everywhere?

It is so disgusting. Who smokes in their bathroom anyway? This is the last time I buy a house from smokers. The glass above the doors was running with nasty brown tar when I cleaned them--I'd though they were tinted!

Also have tar in the light switches, and have just used grout reviver all over the bathroom due to it being tar-stained.

I put neat bleach on a cloth and rub it over the cord. Worth a go. Yuk by the way poor you. Happy cleaning.

Kim and Aggie tackled this once, they wrapped some cotton wool with neat bleach on it around the cord and left it for a few hours and it came up like new

excellent! I love Kim and Aggie, I shall try that trick and report back.
