my washing machine is eating things

Why do I keep finding 50p size ripped holes in freshly washed garments? There was one in a school sock belonging to DS1, but I figured it went with the territory. Then I washed DS2's Little White Company knitted tank top thing and found an identical hole in the back of it just below the neckline. Similar holes found in a dress of mine. What is living in there?

I have felt all around the drum of it and the door and can't find anything sharp. I'm also pretty confident there wasn't anything left in a pocket, especially as these three garments were washed separately.

What is occurring?

What spin speed do you use? I suspect if you set the spin down to 600rpm or something like that the problem would be sorted.

I don't get a choice of spin speed, unless different programmes automatically spin it at different rates. There's nothing on the machine to indicate a variation in spin speed though.

This can be down to overloading. Try putting putting less in.

stressed2007 · 02/03/2010 21:37

mine does this but it is tiny holes in things - it is going in the bin and I am buying a new machine.

Thanks for your advice. stressed, I have a nasty feeling I'm in for a new machine too, which I could really do without having to pay for.

Still, it managed a load last night without any holes (that I've found, anyway), so here's hoping.

Have you closed all zippers of garments that go in the wash?

I found since I really make sure all zippers are closed (not to forget the ones on trouser pockets) I don*t have this problem any more.

stressed2007 · 03/03/2010 10:59

mine has got nothing to do with zips unfortunately

Mine did this when one of the paddles came off, I just took the thing out and carried on using the machine and ruined a few good things before I twigged, but the same thing can happen if the machine is overloaded so said the engineer who fixed the problem for me.
