Dishwasher issues - why is it doing this?

Hi. Have the dishwasher loaded with finish tablets, rinse aid and salt. We seem to have ongoing issues with glasses (even new ones) coming out very misty wth marks and not at all clean and these and other crockery coming out with a gritty film on them (almost like transparent sand). I have cleaned the filters. This tends to be happening to stuff loaded in the top shelf. Does anyone have an idea as to what is causing this? Thanks

Have you cleaned out the spray arms as well? You need to get in a with a needle and poke out any bits stuck in flush it out.

I did the other week and it made a big difference.

Not sure if it is relevant but what tablets are you using - if it's 5 in 1 and most tend to be these days I'm pretty sure you won't need rinse aid and definitely not salt. I use what ever 5 in 1 tabs are on offer, and then a Finish Drying one (can't remember the actual name!).

you can take the spray arms out and run em under the tap checking that there's nothing like a chip of china stuck.

agree with Tina, maybe you don't need rinse aid and salt if you are using the all in one tablets.

Do you think it is "extra" ingredients then that are causing this?

could be, don't know really as I use detergent, rinse aid and salt all separately iyswim.

but I have heard people who use the tablets say - you have to ignore the red light that says you need salt or rinse aid because you already have it in your tablet.

But, if it's mainly happening to the top shelf stuff, check the spray arm for blockages...and also that it is spinning freely.

You could try cleaning the machine with Finish Dishwasher cleaner.

For a cheaper alternative (which is just as good) try Soda Crystals. Sprinkle lots onto bottom of machine and run a very hot wash.

Have you adjusted the dial on the rinse aid? My brother did this once, can't remember if he put it all the way up or down but the glass was comming out cloudy too. I put the dial back to the middle and it has been fine ever since.

This happened to me when I used salt with tablets, most tablets contain salt and rinse aid so you dont need extra.

hi - sorry to tell you that it means that the in-built water softener is worn out - the sand stuff is the insides breaking down - can happen if you leave off the salt hole cap & then run the d/w - how old is it ? - maybe its still under guarantee - if not would cost a lot to repair - so either need a new one or learn to live with it for a while - you might find it better if you don't put salt in & just use best quality tabs (5 in 1) instead

orienteerer · 13/03/2010 12:05

Too much salt me thinks.

stressed2007 · 21/03/2010 14:22

how odd - everyone I know keeps telling me to put more salt in even with the 5 in 1. The arm isn't blocked as have checked this - not another new item to buy I hope!
