What to look for in a range cooker?

I am replacing our aga (which I have never got on with) with a cooker at last. I have no idea what to get i.e. what features to look for. Prices seem to vary widely from about £800 to £4000 and I am having difficulty trying to work out why. I tend to like electric rather then gas but could be persuaded. Do any ranges have halogen glass electric rings?

Can anyone please suggest what is useful to have in a range e.g. one oven or several. If anyone has a range they love please can they recommend it. Thanks

Definitely gas, with electric oven(s)

Falcon ranges are fab, a friend has had 2 (in 2 different houses) She's a food technologist/fab cook and knows her stuff.

I'm just waiting for my crappy inherited range cooker (Britannia? Can't even remember the make & all the temps/names have just about been rubbed off) to die so I can buy a Falcon

Although it's rubbish, my existing one has 2 ovens (1 electric fan, 1 gas) + separate grill + storage drawer for roasting tins etc - I like all these features. I would only cook with gas hobs, electric aren't responsive enough and I don't like my parents' halogen rings at all.

It's vvv nice but I really don't want to spend £3k on one - I need a new car too (current car worth about a tenth of that cooker!)

John Lewis own brand ones are meant to be good. Another friend has a Rangemaster, paid about £1500 for a 110cm one by shopping around - very nice.

Can you sell your Aga to help fund the new one?

i got a second hand rangemaster on ebay for £100. it is totally gas though.

check out the second hand market. if it is a good brand it is worth it.
