Cheap alternative to playbark?

Not sure where to ask this. We are building a tree house and want to put down a slightly safer surface underneath. I have just looked up what play bark costs . Has anyone found a cheaper clever alternative? DH is thinking of sawdust from the sawmill.

Hadn't thought of sand! With a good membrane to contain it. Off to price it now.

Wickes do 3 for the price of 2 on play bark sometimes. Sand will just turn into a giant cats crapper

Luckily we live in the country on a main road with very few outside cats and a dog who discourages them. Will look out for Wickes though.

just googled, and lemon and orange peel, and pepper are all good detterents, for cats using it as a litter tray.

We could easily collect a lot of orange peel.

Hi, we built a play area 2 years ago for our children and couldn't believe price of play bark. Is quite a big area so we asked a local timber merchant if they could supply us with wood/bark chippings. This is the kind of stuff you might use on your flower beds to deter weeds. We got a truck load delivered for £50 and just lined the area underneath with garden ground cover (weed suppresant. It has certainly stood the test of time, cushioning many a fall and still looks tidy.

If you want bark you are better as cluckcluckoink says and getting it in bulk ont those silly little bags that you get from B&Q and the like.

We got ours delivered from a local garden centre in one of those big bags that they deliver sand and gravel in.
