Can you recommend some good saucepans please...need to replace non stick ones

Just realised the non stickies I've had for a few years have started to get a few rough bits on the inside, and after Riven said something I looked at the stuff on the web and realised they are probably poisoning us!

So I would really like to replace them.

I only have two anyway, and don't want a whole set...what I could do with is a medium sized one, a big stockpot sized one and maybe a largeish one as well.

I have had a quick look on Tesco but don't know where to start...preferably not TOO ££ but good quality and performance would be an asset as I want them to last and cannot abide wobbly handles.

Meanwhile am stuck using ancient cast iron ones which are Ok but really heavy.

So...stainless steel, or copper bases or what do we go for?

We replaced ours from John Lewis and I am very happy with them. They were reasonably priced and will last us ages. They're not non-stick are stainless steel, have metal hollow handles, and can be bought individually. Previously we had wooden handled pans, which cost a fortune, but despite being dishwasherproof, the handles eventually came off. Prestige replaced them but again they wore away so we went for the John Lewis ones, and they're great.

Thanks Maggie...have seen some nice steel ones with copper bottoms by Morphy Richards...handles look hollow on those too.

I never know which are the best handles but will avoid wood!

I got mine from BHS and they have been fab! They actually sound like the ones MaggieW got from JL, (but were bought a few years ago) Nothing fancy, just really nice quality solid stainless.

Thankyou very much, BHS worth a try then! Have reserved some from argos to see what they are like but I didn't really want a whole set...I think they are good about returns though if no good!

We got jamie Oliver fecal stainless steel ones as a wedding gift. They were prob a bit dear but I think they'll last really well. They are a nice weight, have a rubbery grip on the handle and can be bought as a set or individually. I like them lots.

Mine are SS Meyer and are still the business after 14 years of use. Available in most department stores. QVC's Cooks Essentials range look very good value.

If I were going non-stick I'd either look at SKK (tres cher - sadly trop cher for moi), or I'd do what I'm doing now which is buy the odd cheap non-stick pan from TK Maxx and treat it as semi-disposable, binning it as soon as it starts to look dodgy.

Thanks guys. I have broguth home the Morphy Richards ones and tbh the quality of the pans is good, but the handles are a bit naff...they are just kind of hollow metal with cutouts and there is a warning saying they get really hot what is the point of handles that get hot?

I was almost going to keep them though, but went to TKMaxx this afternoon and found loads of really nice ones...there was a set of Anthony Worral Thompson ones, half price, but also some Judge Vista ones on their own. I looked at the AWT ones and didn't like the quality of the handles on them, so went for the Judge ones which apparently have a 25yr guarantee - not that I'll be able to call that in if they are from TKM! but they feel great, handles are much stronger and plastic, they have glass lids and a pouring spout and strainer in the lid edge which is brilliant.
So got 3 of those plus one other random steel one. All came to about £50 which was Ok, though I might go back and get saute pan as well! the MR ones are going back tomorrow.
