Anyone had their house in a magazine?

Had a potentially mad notion today that I'd like to send photos of our house to a home magazine. We have recently finished decorating our house and I love love love the way it has turned out. I'm addicted to house magazines and still get them monthly, even though we're not changing anything else for now. Anyone had their home featured in a magazine? How did you go about it? Do they pay you to feature your house in their magazine? Am I mad to even consider this?

Yes; my ex-boyfriend and I had our flat in Good Homes. No pay. He worked in the same building and had chatted to someone on the magazine team so when the kitchen was re-done they asked to feature it as a 'before and after'. I'm sure if you emailed photos to whichever mag seemed most appropriate they'd get in contact.

My parents have been in a couple. Friends of theirs knew the photographer at the magazines & suggested it as a good place to do a spread. No pay & a bit of a faff IMO.

Glad you like your home so much, it must feel lovely

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/02/2010 14:31

My parents have and no pay.

I LOVE those magazine

The pictures are always of the mother looking stylishly busy while Lucius, Chylamidia and Ennui twirl charmingly in items from Little Marc Jacobs.

Wife ALWAYS has her own interior design business. Dh is either not photographed at all or is shot from a distance so you cannot see his totally fucked off expression at not having been allowed to shit for the last six days while some poncy photographer waits for the light to kiss the gleaming porcelain and provide a backdrop for the macramed shower curtain dappled with 300 swaroski crystal that wifey picked up at her local antique shop

Pollyanna · 05/02/2010 14:40

I did - we had a new kitchen in our flat in N London and the kitchen people got it put in a mag. The kitchen was at one end of a huge, high ceilinged living room which we had also decorated quite nicely.

the rest of the flat was not featured!

I was in it, but about 3 weeks postpartum with ds1. I looked hideous. there were quotes from me and dh about such things as draining boards. We sounded like knobs.

at Pollyanna

I bet you didn't have any clever little antique shop finds or dappled swaroski crystals either..

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 05/02/2010 14:49

Pagwatch - You forgot to mention that her interior design business will be based around little gewgaws picked up at charming French brocantes and that she herself will have run up miles of bunting from the antique linen sheets found in greatgrandmama's attic.

and commiserations to Pollyanna.

pagwatch · 05/02/2010 14:51

yes yes, that is true... how could I overlook greatgrandma and her strange discarded sheet behaviour..

onlyjoinedforoffers · 05/02/2010 14:52

the little girls always have fairy wings on in the mags like Ideal Home and are perching on the worktop next to the kettle in Living Etc

memoo · 05/02/2010 14:56

Why not put them on your profile? I luuurve looking at other peoples houses

TheCrackFox · 05/02/2010 14:56

If dad is lucky enough to be photographed (always at a distance) he will be bare foot and leaning against aga/range cradling a mug of coffee.

The children all have blonde, ringletty hair.

The house I live in now was in a magazine but by the previous owners. I am far too lazy.

pagwatch · 05/02/2010 15:08

Ok .
I want to take pictures of mine now and send them in.Do all the pretty shots but with Dcs watching tv and me and Dh in the bathroom having a row...dog shitting in the middle ofthe lawn... KFC boxes on the worktops

Francagoestohollywood · 05/02/2010 15:10

I'd pay to see the inside of your house Pagwatch, it looks gorgeous from the pics on your profile...

pagwatch · 05/02/2010 15:12

I will send you one of the dog shitting on the porch as a memento..

Francagoestohollywood · 05/02/2010 15:16

that'd be fab, but make sure there is also an interesting quote to go with it, like "we love collecting and always have our eyes open"...

pagwatch · 05/02/2010 15:19

" these items were quite a find..."

preggersplayspop · 05/02/2010 15:21

I love these magazines too. The best quotes are always in 23 Beautiful Homes, which are always hilarious.

The women always wear wrap around dresses over floaty trousers and are casually arranging flowers at the kitchen island. Not fake uggs and scraping weetabix off the high chair, like at my house.

A friend of my DH's got some photos in a magazine apparently and he was saying that a lot of the people in Living Etc do it to promote their own business. Since I heard this I have realised its true, most of the people are interior designers or sell interiors stuff.

preggersplayspop · 05/02/2010 15:23

Um, 25 beautiful homes, not 23 beautiful homes (though there are normally a couple of shockers in there that slipped through the net).

hf128219 · 05/02/2010 15:31

We had our cottage in a magazine - they asked us to wear tartan. The production manager also brought one of her own props along for dd - - we drew the line at that

preggersplayspop · 05/02/2010 15:36

at tartan. Did they ask you to whip up a haggis at the kitchen island for the photo while you were at it?

hf128219 · 05/02/2010 15:39

No, but they laid out shortbread and a decanter of Whisky in the hallway.

ImSoNotTelling · 05/02/2010 15:39

Yes to people doing it for their own businesses. Always but always interior designers.

Am planning extension and have been poring over these mags of late. bit of a revelation I've never looked at them before. The ones who have bought for £50K, spent £2.50 and now it's worth £6.8 trillion always make me , I'm ashamed to say. i think reading these mags doesn't bring out the best in me...

preggersplayspop · 05/02/2010 15:45

Crikey, that's some styling. What magazine was it?! Is there a 25 Real Scottish Ideal Homes I have somehow missed in WH Smith?

ImSoNotTelling, they are really addictive so now you have started buying them you won't be able to stop.
