Does anyone have an oven that's a microwave as well? I didn't know there was such a thing till now and it would be perfect for us. Ikea do them. Does anyone have one of these strange hybrid creatures and are they useful/good/ rubbish or what?

my parents have one and they love it

BooKangerooWonders · 04/02/2010 18:54

we got one purely cos the door opens downwards like a real oven, but in all honesty, only use the microwave part of it. I've used eg the grill, when cooking oven chips for ds but it always seems easier to put on the 'real' oven.

Keep meaning to get out the instruction book and find out what it can really do.

empirestrikesback · 04/02/2010 18:56

oh hello! thanks, cookielove. what make is it ? did they get it from Ikea? How long have they had it? Did they get it as part of installing a new kitchen? Can they use the microwave function for just ordinary little things like heating up beans? Can i go round to their house and look at it?

bookangeroowonders do you mean it's like a separate thing? the micro bit isn't in the oven but just on a differnet function setting or whatever? What make is it? I'd like to look it up on Google and have a proper look

Ours is a Neff. It's a combi oven, so the micro is included, but there are different functions like grill etc.

cookielove · 06/02/2010 20:11

They did have a new kitchen installed, and it was part of it, so i have no clue of the cost, (if i asked my dad he would be get all silly that everything is about money with me) I believe it is a neff, like BooKangerooWonders.

They use both functions all the time, my mum uses it lots. And yes you can use it just to heat up things like baked beans, i think what my mum tends to do is defrost with microwave and then cook with the oven (one specific food item i mean) does that makes sense?

Hmmm yeah sure ya can i'm sure they won't mind

Lonicera · 06/02/2010 20:17

ours is similar to this

elliott · 06/02/2010 20:27

We have a neff one too. i like it because it means we don't have a microwave out on the kitchen worktop. it is our second oven, and we tend to mainly use the microwave function (and yes it works just like a normal microwave). I find it isn't as good a conventional oven as our 'main' oven, but as a back up when we really need to have two ovens on the go, its fine.

EVye · 07/02/2010 19:53

We have one. Bosch. Was great but now the microwave doesnt work properly (think it got burnt out by being used as an oven). Is however fab oven as has fast heat function.

stitch · 07/02/2010 19:57

my mom bought one in 1987. used continuously till it died about five years ago. then she bough a new one.
ive used one continuously for the last 7 years or so. used a normal oven for a short period of time, but too unreliable imo. convection microwaves as they are called, are the only way to go ime.

TeaandCake · 08/02/2010 13:22

We have had a Sharp one for the last 10 years and use it every day, tis brill!!

The main oven is built in and was inherited with the house but it is fairly unpredictable for precision cooking - Baking cakes especially. We use the oven/micro combi (in oven mode) more often because it has a smaller capacity and pre-heats far quicker than the big oven.

TeaandCake · 08/02/2010 13:25

Ooh, forgot to add; the dual oven/micro cooking feature is excellent for baked spuds and cooking through large dishes such as a huge lasagne.

crumpet · 08/02/2010 13:26

We have one - it's great. Think its a Neff.

Microwave function not quite as fast as our previous microwave, but is fine (eg to warm milk used to take 40 secs in previous lmicrowave and now takes 1min).

badgerhead · 09/02/2010 13:25

I am on my 3rd Pansonic Combination oven/microwave & find them so useful especially as a back up to the main oven when you want to cook food at two different temperatures or do a quick meal. My first & my second ones were my only oven for a long time so were very well used.

hillbilly · 10/02/2010 11:22

We have a Panasonic one and swear by it. It has many different functions and all work well.

Lilymaid · 10/02/2010 11:28

I've got a Panasonic (18 years old) with fan and ordinary oven and grill as well as microwave and combinations of these. I find it very useful - apart from the grill which I hardly every use.
