Question for the smokers

How often do you wash your ashtrays?

and

Do you put anything in the bottom of your ashtrays to help neutralise the smell? Can you even get something like that?

and

How do you stop your house smelling like smell apart from not smoking inside?

I wash mine every night before i go to bed and i try to smoke outside as much as possible but its not possible every time i want a ciggie.

My house doesnt smell really bad of smoke but obviously it does smell to a point because both me and DP smoke although i have cut down a lot and am trying to quit, my sister who is a non smoker who hates smoking and the smell says it doesnt smell that bad its only a faint tinge but i dont even want that.

I know the answer is to stop all smoking in the house but is there another way, i havent found a decent air freshener either that helps.

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled in the ashtrays helps. Also windows open as often as possible. Try to smoke in the room with the least upholstery (probably kitchen) as carpets, curtains and sofas absorb the smell.

We have an open fire, mainly logs, and the smoke tends to drift towards the fire when it is lit and goes up the chimney. Open fires, draughts and rugs which were aired outdoors probably account for the fact that homes in the 'good old days' never seemed to small that bad.
