Stripping towels of smells

My husband takes a towel to the gym. I've started to notice when damp whilst drying they smell a bit. Can you strip them down of smells like re-usable nappies or should I just throw away and buy new?

i presume you've tried washing at 60, our towels have a whole new lease of life since they were included in the nappy wash (despite being dark blue) rather than the normal, 40 degree wash...
