Smells after washing clothes

A bit embarrassing this, but here goes...

Several of my tops (always cotton ones I think) after I have had them for a while get an unpleasant deodorant/sweat smell under the arms that won't wash out, so I end up getting rid of them. This has just happened to a top I really like. I put Vanish on it for luck and washed it again without wearing but it still smells exactly the same. Anyone have a solution?

Hurray for the anonymity of MN.

You could try changing deodorant, or waiting until it is completely dry? My hubby had this problem and eventually found it was not waiting until it was fully dry that caused the major problems, as the deodorant didn't work as well and also rubbed off and even though I washed all his tops really well, over time it did get to the point that things were being thrown away

Or you could wear a sort of thin T shirt Vest under things, and those can be thrown away instead of your fav tops maybe? Good idea for Winter, not so much for Summer of course
