unused loo is smelling

We have 2 upstairs bathrooms and a downstairs shower room and an understairs loo

The under stairs one rarely got used before but since the flush handle fell off, it hasn't been used for months. You have to remove the top and pull the lever by hand

This week, we noticed a bad smell and traced it to this loo. The cistern was full of stagnant water as it hasn't been flushed for a while. What is the best thing to put in the cistern to keep it fresh? I think I will get it taken out in the summer but need something in the meantime in case I forget to flush it regularly

I think you just have to get into a habit of flushing it regularly tbh. A pain I know if you don't use it but otherwise the water will go stagnant.

I agree that you should try to remember to flush it and keep the lid down so the stagnant droplets don't become airborne. I would also pour some white vinegar in the back before pulling the whatever you pull, it is suppose to kill most of the bacteria.
