My duvet covers are ancient - is it worth spending loads or not?

For some reason it crossed my mind that the three bedding sets that dh and I have were all bought in the first year of our relationship about 13years ago . Considering two of them are plain white and haven't gone grey they've done well, but obviously its time to get some new ones. I received a 'free' white company brochure with my Ocado delivery tonight and was wondering about buying a set from there in the sale. Whats the difference between spending a lot on bed linen or going to primark? White Company I guess would be mid market, so ok?

White Company are lovely - beautiful, soft cotton. I have some that has lasted years and still looks and feels great.

But to be honest, you can't go wrong with Ikea! Get the slightly more expensive setd (£25!) and the cotton is really good, but perhaps not as soft as WC.

Still get mattress protectors from Primark though - what a bargain!

I only ever go for 100% cotton, and Primark do some really nice ones, but they are a bit skimpy, so the fitted sheet is a bit overstretched if your mattress is deep. Otherwise they are a bargain.

Laura Ashley have nice, luxurious bedlinen too, if their sale is still on!

Fab, I'm nowhere near an Ikea so perhaps White Company it is, but will have a look at Laura Ashley, I'm such a pennypincher so want excellent quality for peanuts.

Primark or asda. Just give them a quick wash first.

I have loads of bedsets, and while I would not go for Asda's el cheapo range, most supermarket bedding is more than fine. I got some of the Sainsbo's taste the difference (or whatever it's called, the superior range) just before Christmas, it was on special and it is very good.

I got dd a duvet cover from Asda and it has never been used - after repeated washings even after fabric softener (yes, fabric softener, am working class ) it is still cardboard like.

At last count I had 9 bedsets for my bed and 3 for dd's. Why fgs? I must have linen obsession.

None of them are from White Company - all from supermarkets, Debenhams or Cavendish House.

I too have loads for the dc's, but as I said the same old three sets for me and dh. I think the dc's have so many because they grow in and out of favourite colours etc. I was never going to have children with tasteless character bed linen, but we have Ben10, High School Musical etc etc - bit like the plastic toys we weren't going to buy.

Wouldn't spend high price on White Company stuff. We press a lot of sheets and the higher the price the more the linen loses its shape in first washes. (www.mumsnet.com/te/3.gif)

Sainsbury have got theirs on sale now - I've just bought a king size duvet cover and two pillow cases for £7.99!

my favourite is the John Lewis 50-50 polycotton percale

yes I know it isn;t pure cotton but it doesn;t feel synthetic, doesn't bobble, doesn;t need ironing and wears extremely well - much better than some of the more expensive stuff we;ve got through. ALso comes in 3000 plain colours, so worth a look for sheets even if not for duvet cases.

BHS do a nice Egyptian cotton range which is really special but not horribly pricey. Trouble is, they don't seem to do duvet covers, just sheets and pillowcases. So I went to the duvet and pillow co for my double duvet. They are great for duvets but the duvet cover is a bit of a pain in the backside. They make them larger with the idea they will shrink a bit in the wash. I don't think mine has! And it's a bit of a faff, all fabric everywhere.
That could just be me though.

Have you got a matalan? I got a very nice 100% egyptian cotton set from there, plain white with kind of satin stripes (ie stripes a diff texture but not colour), looks posh, was cheapo and has lasted well.

I bought some lovely bedding from here just recently and it's been really great quality so I was thrilled. I think you get what you pay for and a lot of cheap bedding just goes all bobbly really quickly, no matter what it says the thread count etc is! I've learnt my lesson the hard way.
