Where have all the spiders gone?

I usually live in fear of the huge house spiders we regularly have in our house, but haven't seen a single one, anywhere - for weeks on end.

I have this God-awful feeling they're just hiding out, waiting until they've grown 4x their normal size before they resume terrorising me...

Where have all the spiders gone?

I was going to say "who cares" so long as they're gone but now I'm going to be worrying about them turning up 4 x their normal size...

Spannerweb · 15/01/2010 21:58

This is the thing. I'm unnerved.

I bet they're watching me at this very moment and thinking, "not just yet lads... we've still a bit more growing to do"

LOL!

You're right though. You'd think they'd be indoors with the weather being so cold. I wonder if they've all frozen?

Spannerweb · 15/01/2010 22:08

Oh, man......this isn't good. I'm not happy.

I always say this just before I see a huge one but I really haven't seen one for ages. I tend to get more beetle type things here - which I can deal with as they are slower and not so scuttly.

the males die in the winter (mating season is in autumn, you will see lots of male house spiders then but they die after mating)

females often (maybe always?) die after laying the eggs, spiderlings usually hatch late spring

Nope they are not frozen, they are all in MY house! Ds2 gor 2 out for me this morning as I am terrified of them!

Are spiders territorial? I used to have a mahoosive one under the washing machine but it died. Hurrah says me as I got rid of the remains. Now another, equally big one, lives under the fridge. Was he just waiting for his chance?

I had 2 spiders on my bedroom ceiling last night and this morning I can only see 1 with a little black bundle of something all wrapped up and ready to eat. So I think they may have all eaten each other over winter and there's only a few left.

I must say that yesterday I did a big tidy in my entrance hall and I think I might have disturbing them, hence them comming out to spook me this morning!
