i find that every mat i get lways MOVES (also have pushchairs and 3 dirty boys!!!)

my solution, which hasn't happened yet but will, is to get a built-in mat.
we're due new carpet and one of the guys we had out to quote offered a built in mat, basically you just have a bit of door mat cut to size, and they edge it to join onto the carpet

and I think i'll then get a runner or something for the rest of the hall

If your hallway has hard floors, you can can get a non-slip mat to put under the mat itself.

I have carpet in the hallway and I have the same problem as you, thisisyesterday, can't keep anything there Maybe stick-on velcro?

yes! just bought one for our hall, having put it off for ages cos they seem so expensive. anyway, it does really trap the dirt and doesn't slip at all (on Karndean hard floor). But website is v diffiuclt to shop from - there is much better choice of sizes than it suggests and much more choice of ones with the hard floor backing if you get the catalogue.

i specifically like turtle mat tho as it is supposed to trap dirt? and is machine washable.

we have wooden floor in hallway i mop it every day! esp this weather.

Yes they are fantastic. They really do clean shoes/paws just by walking over them. They can go in the washing machine and come up like new. I've had mine more than 10 years and it's not worn at all. (which is a shame, as I've had my eye on one of the new designs for ages!)

At our last house (when I bought it) all our downstairs except the living room had white tiled floors - mopping went from everyday to once a week.

It is important to get the right backing though - the hard floor one doesn't shift at all on wood/tiles, but is dreadful on carpet.

Wow - these sound amazing! I have white tiles in the utility room and kitchen, and a brown labrador with mud-magnets for paws, so I have been wondering whether one of these would help my floor stay cleanish.

At the moment, we have to grab the dog when she comes in, and wipe her paws clean with a towel, and she doesn't like that at all.

It sounds like getting the catalogue is the way to go - I'll put it on my 'To Do' list.

We've got turtle mats and they are great, I also bough a turtle mat lookalike from Wilkinsons and it is no where near as good as the real thing.

We're having new bamboo floors laid at the moment and we are having built in mats (basically, a turtle mat sized hole by each door) so they shouldn't slide about.
