Getting rid of that mothball smell - any tips? Is it even possible?

In a moment of madness (and infestation) I put a load of mothballs in with DD's baby clothes in storage. Now getting them out and ready for the new baby due next month and they smell horrendous. Have just done the first wash and while it's slightly taken the edge of it, they're still pretty horrible. What can I do?!?

Found something online about putting a cup of vinegar in with the wash, which sounds a bit weird but I'm willing to give anything a go at the moment. Anyone tried this?

Otherwise it's helpful suggestions about hanging them out in a meadow on a sunny day. Not terribly practical in central London in January.
