Stinky cast iron pan - how can I make it smell ok again?

DP like a twat cooked some herrings that he'd got cheap for the bloody dog in a cast iron oven dish. It now smells fishy however much I wash it and made my lovely apple crumble taste rank.

What can I do to de-stink it, or is it doomed?

This isn't very green, and is probably completely poisonous so rinse rinse rinse, but on our sink, if it needs a super clean I often use biological washing powder. Sprinkled over a wet pan, so that it becomes a sort of paste iyswim. Either that or Vanish oxi action powder. Or maybe you could try bicarb or soda crystals. Obviously it comes with a rinse x1000 disclaimer.

Oh yes bicarb paste smeared on it and left overnight maybe?

It is so annoying - I keep washing it really thoroughly and leaving it to soak with bits of lemon in, and it smells ok again, but as soon as it is dry the smell is back.

Good plan. You could also try white vinegar? It works to descale things so it might also work. And also may make your crumble taste like fish and chips

I use bio washing powder too - it really does get rid of any nastiness. Agree with moodlum that rinsing is the key unless you want a soapy crumble!

It is currently marinading in a paste of bicarb and lemon juice [yummy]

We dont use bio washing powder so I'd have to buy a box specially, so will see if this works first.
